Macular Pigment Optical Density - MPOD and Bioslife Vision Essentials

Vision is one of life’s gifts that we sometimes take for granted. We rarely think about it unless our eyesight fails. Vision impairment, especially as we grow older, is a major health problem.

Age-related visual impairment is second only to arthritis or rheumatism as a cause of disability. Vision loss ranks third, after arthritis and heart disease, as the reason for impaired daily functioning in people over the age of 70.

Last week, optometry professionals from all over the world attended a special conference in Schloss Hohenkammer, Germany, in order to report on the latest research and information on lutein—an essential carotenoid found in large concentrations in the eye.

Lutein acts as “internal sunglasses” protecting the eyes against light-induced oxidative damage. Consuming lutein increases what is called “Macular Pigment Optical Density” (MPOD) in human eyes. Studies suggest that higher levels of MPOD are associated with a decreased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and improved visual function.

How proud I am that our premier supplement for eye health, Bios Life Vision Essentials, contains a lutein called “FloraGLO” which has been proven to be the most clinically-studied source of lutein and the number one doctor-recommended source of lutein for eye health products. In fact, FloraGLO lutein was the leading recommendation to emerge from last week’s conference. I hope you’ll start today protecting and nourishing your eyes with our Bios Life Vision Essentials.

This latest vision-health formulation based on emerging science, incorporates the most potent Unicity blend of vitamins and antioxidants proven to support and maintain eye health. The special blend of antioxidants in Vision Essentials may slow down the advance of AMD (age-related macular degeneration).

Vision Essentials and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Bios Life Vision Essentials™
Maintain Optimal Eye Health
Made in USA by Unicity International.

Bios Life Vision Essentials™ is a powerful antioxidant formulation designed to protect the eyes from damaging free radicals and to support healthy vision. This potent formula is based on the ground-breaking National Institutes
of Health’s (NIH) AREDS I and AREDS II studies, where it is found that a combination of antioxidants helps delay the onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

In addition to many of the antioxidants included in this study, Bios Life Vision Essentials™ also includes a berry blend that is high in polyphenols, a special group of antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables.

INGREDIENT INFORMATION

Vitamin C – A water-soluble antioxidant found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Although many mammals can produce vitamin C, humans must obtain their vitamin C from their diet.

Vitamin E – A fat-soluble antioxidant that helps prevent the production of reactive oxygen species formed when fat undergoes oxidation.

Vitamin A – A group of fat soluble antioxidants found in colorful fruits and vegetables. In carrots, this antioxidant is responsible for their bright orange color.

Zinc – Over 100 enzymes are dependent on this trace mineral for their ability to catalyze reactions in the body. Zinc is found in red meats, wheat, celery, beans and almonds.

Lutein – Derived from marigolds, this antioxidant is responsible for the plant’s rich color. The discovery by scientists that lutein is found in high concentrations in the eye led to studies to determine how lutein supplementation affects eye health.

Zeaxanthin – Like lutein, zeaxanthin is found in high concentrations in the eye relative to other parts of the body. Zeaxanthin is a major component of the central macula, while lutein is a major component of the peripheral retina. Zeaxanthin is responsible for paprika’s bright red color.

Bios Life® Berry Blend – An antioxidant rich berries blend that includes blueberry, strawberry, cranberry, billberry, elderberry and raspberry which is high in polyphenols that help to support healthy vision and to neutralize free radicals

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

A. AMD is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp, central vision. Central vision is needed for seeing objects clearly and for common daily tasks such as reading and driving. AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows us to see fine detail. AMD causes no pain. In some cases, AMD advances so slowly that people notice little change in their vision. In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in both eyes. The Eye Diseases Prevalence Research Group (EDPRG) attributes AMD as the major cause of blindness among elderly people of European ancestry.

Q. What can I do to protect my vision?
A. Along with consulting with a physician, we recommend the following:

1. Take a supplement, like Bios Life Vision Essentials™ based on the AREDS I and II studies.
2. Take a Salmon omega-3 fatty acid supplement
3. Avoid lots of direct sunlight, or use uv protected lenses when out in the sun.
4. Rest your eyes

Q. I’ve heard a lot about lutein in eye health. What is it and why is it good for your eyes?
A. Lutein is a fat-soluble carotenoid found in the lens and macula lutea of the eye. Lutein is able to filter blue light and act as an antioxidant. Blue light and reactive oxygen species are believe
to contribute to the loss of vision.

Lutein supplementation has also been found to improve visual functions: better photostress glare recovery, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity.

To aid in understanding the significance of this, imagine driving down the freeway at night and staring at the light of an oncoming car’s headlights. This bright light creates glare and makes it
hard to make out details. Taking lutein will make it easier to read street signs and recover sooner from the bright glare of a headlight.

Bioslife Vision Essentials is the latest upgrade to the older versions of Visutein and Biltein Vision.

Cataract, Glaucoma, Age-Macular Degeneration and Night Blindness

One of my suppliers Mr Lim went for his eye operation due to glaucoma 2 weeks ago. Last week when we met up, he was complaining that he still sees distractions in his vision.

I remember one of my friend's mother used to get headaches after watching tv or reading the papers. But after just a bottle of VISUtein, she was able to enjoy her tv dramas and newspapers without any more headaches.

I recommended he use VISUtein - a supplement from USA, that is listed in the 2010 Physicians Desk Reference. (PDR) To be listed in the PDR, means VISUtein has undergone Clinical trials in a few major eye hospitals in USA. After the results are presented and accepted at an Optomology conference, the product can then be listed in the PDR. The PDR is the reference guide book for 90% of all doctors and pharmacists, to recommend products to their patients.

DESCRIPTION

VISUtein is Unicity's product providing key nutrients for the eye. The product is particularly high-dosed in lutein.

Benefits and research

The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin play an important role in eye health. Low concentrations of these phytonutrients in the retina have been associated with age-related macula degeneration (AMD). Studies have shown, that supplementation with high levels of lutein, as present in VISUtein, can restore the lutein concentration in the retina.

The product further features important vitamins, and carotenoids that are critical in preserving overall eye health and supporting clear vision. N-acetyl cysteine is added to boost the glutathion levels. Low glutathion levels have been shown to reduce protection of the eye against oxidative stress.

Bilberry is known to stimulate visual acuity, and provides anthocyanidins, strong eye-specific antioxidants. A recent clinical study with VISUtein has shown that AMD patients experience clear improvements in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and recovery from a flash.

SUGGESTED USE

Take two capsules per day with a meal. 1 bottle contains 60 capsules.

Contents

VISUtein provides 18 mg of lutein, along with 200 mg of N-acetyl cystein, and 60 mg anthocyanidins from bilberry. Other ingredients are mixed carotenoids, vitamins A, B2, and zinc.

For detailed dietary information, please see http://www.unicity.net/unicityscience/products_visuetein.html

SAFETY AND WARNINGS

VISUtein is well accepted. Some gastrointestinal discomfort may be experienced as with any dietary supplement.
